Unless you're recording shows throughout the day, consider cutting the power to your TiVo or Digital Video Recorder (DVR) device when you're not using it. Unfortunately, turning the system off doesn't reduce energy consumption, as the components of the system are still running on the inside.

By connecting your TiVo or DVR system to a power strip or wall switch so that it can effectively be "unplugged" when not in use, you could save more than $20 per year on energy bills. You'll save even more if you unplug your TV as well.

If all of the estimated 20 million U.S. households with TiVo or DVR units had them unplugged for just 15 hours per week, the annual energy savings would equal 1.1 billion kilowatt-hours. This energy savings is enough to keep 9.2 million pounds of coal from being burned in a pollution-billowing coal-fired power plant.
