Choosing efficient panes means energy saved and money gained. The next time you're (literally) window-shopping, make sure the panes you choose are energy-efficient. (You can determine this by looking for the Energy Star label).
Energy-efficient windows are lined with special coatings that reflect heat and provide superior insulation to single-paned or even conventional double-paned windows.
Because windows are significant sources of heat loss during the winter and unwanted heat gain during the summer, energy-efficient windows can help you keep your home at a comfortable temperature, without having to constantly run your heater or AC.
Depending on where you live, you can save between $125 and $450 per year on your energy bills by replacing single-paned windows with Energy Star qualified ones. If you switch from double-paned windows, the savings can total $25-$110 annually. (Check-out Energy Star for regional savings estimates).
If one in every ten U.S. housing units upgrades from single-paned windows to energy-efficient ones, the energy savings could exceed $3.7 billion per year.
If these energy-efficient windows are installed before December 31, 2007, an additional $6.2 billion could be saved from a tax credit offered by the Department of Energy. The tax credit can be up to $500 for energy-efficient home improvements on a primary residence.
