Cadmium
This is one of many toxic heavy metals that exist naturally in the Earth's crust. Industrially, cadmium is primarily used in batteries; it is also an ingredient in some pigments and a stabilizer in plastics. Cadmium released as industrial waste can make its way to humans, who can be exposed to it in several ways, for instance by eating fish from contaminated waters or plants from contaminated soil, or by breathing air that contains cadmium dust. Like most heavy metals, cadmium is not easily processed by the body; it can bioaccumulate to toxic levels over time. Ordinary, daily exposure to cadmium is not thought to be harmful, but high levels of exposure can lead to reproductive problems, organ damage, and even cancer. |
