The average U.S. household owns at least two vehicles, one of which tends to be a van, truck, or SUV. Although vans, trucks, and SUVs typically travel about as many miles per year as standard cars, they tend to be significantly less fuel-efficient, which makes them more expensive to operate.

By reallocating only 50 miles per week from your SUV, truck, or van to a more economical vehicle, you could save about $55 per month in gas expenses.

If half of all U.S. households with a truck, van, or SUV shifted just 50 miles of driving per week to their other, more fuel-efficient vehicle, the total annual gas savings could top $24 billion-enough to buy more than 1 million 2008 model hybrids.
