Here's a bright idea: an energy-efficient alternative to age-old incandescent lighting. These bulbs require two-thirds less energy, and last as much as ten times longer than incandescents. Using the same technology as standard fluorescent bulbs (visible light emitted via electromagnetic radiation), CFLs are designed to fit into standard light-fixture sockets. They cost more up front than incandescent bulbs: To encourage consumers to give them a try, some utility companies are now subsidizing their cost, and prices are beginning to come down. Although CFLs have been plagued for years by a reputation for casting the kind of harsh glow you might find in an elementary school gym, they actually come in a range of colors today-so you can find the bright white you need for projects as well as warmer, more flattering tones for living spaces. A bonus: They produce 70 percent less heat.

CFLs contain trace amounts of mercury, but this presents no danger in ordinary use. They should be disposed of carefully, however. It's a good idea to check with your local sanitation company for guidelines, or visit www.earth911.org for recycling/disposal facilities in your area.
