There are no estimates of how much fuel is wasted per year by the average driver due to getting lost-although Click and Clack, the dudes at Car Talk, joke that "if every guy stopped and asked for directions when he got lost, the U.S. would never import another barrel of oil!"

Seriously now, if half of all drivers drove an average of just five fewer miles per year because they got correct directions instead of relying on "instinct," the annual fuel savings would be an estimated 22 million gallons of gasoline-equivalent to 40,000 drivers retiring their vehicles and using public transportation for all of their travel.
