West Elm Has Hue in Mind

In the forest of anonymous brands offering natural textiles in earthy hues, West Elm stands out as a different sort of tree: vividly colored and very well known. This fall, the five-year-old retailer and catalog vendor added a line of organic textile products for bath and bedroom to its sleek collection of home furnishings. In addition to offering some bedding in the traditional undyed, natural colors of organic cotton, West Elm distinguishes its towels and sheets with vibrant colors like ozone (electric blue), pomegranate (rich red), and copperplate (deep orange). "We say here that we're going green," notes West Elm's public-relations manager, Kate Mulhearn. She pauses before adding, "And red, and orange, and blue...."

Beyond their affordability, the plush towels ($22 for a bath sheet, $8 for a set of two washcloths), bath mats ($19, square or round), and sheets ($29 to $129) are made from cotton grown without pesticides and herbicides, and colored with dyes that are certified organic by Control Union Certifications (formerly known as Skal International).
