The Container Store's Eco-Enthusiasm

The Container Store has been making it a little easier to be organized and green, by adding a few sustainably made items to its rows and rows of plastic offerings. This recycled-rubber bulletin board is one of them. While traditional cork is itself pretty environmentally friendly, a board made out of used tires is even better.

The frame isn't made of recycled materials, so this item is just a small step into green. But small is better than none at all. While shopping, check out another of the store's clever products using recycled materials: bins made from old newspapers. They're the perfect basket for your old newspapers.

   Post-consumer

A term that refers to something used and discarded by a consumer. With recyclables, purchasing items made with post-consumer material is generally considered better for the environment than buying things made with pre-consumer material (also known as post-industrial recycled content). Post-consumer content is material directly diverted from the waste stream, and buying it supports local recycling programs. The assumption is that pre-consumer material is usually going to be recycled anyway, as there is a financial incentive for industry to do so. By creating a demand for them, seeking out products made with post-consumer recycled content helps encourage industry to make more recycled products.
