Go with the (Low) Flow

Consider replacing your current bathroom and kitchen faucet aerators with low-flow versions.

The aerator is the twist-off part of the faucet located where the water comes out. Most conventional aerators are labeled with a flow rate of 2 to 3 gallons per minute (gpm). You can find replacement low-flow aerators for less than $2. Choose a 1.5 gpm aerator for the kitchen faucet and a 1.0 gpm aerator for bathroom faucets.

A family of four that installs low-flow faucet aerators in their kitchen and bathrooms can reduce their water usage by more than 13 percent-saving more than 1,700 gallons every year.

If half of all U.S. households installed low-flow faucet aerators in their kitchens and bathrooms, the total water savings could equal nearly 90 billion gallons per year-equivalent to the savings achieved if 800,000 households stopped using water altogether.
