Donate Your Sneakers

Unless you're holding out for a smelly sneaker contest, donate your outgrown or old sneakers to a program that recycles them. The rubber used to make sneaker soles is incredibly useful. Companies such as Nike operate national programs that will grind up the soles, and then re-form them into flooring or surfaces for sporting venues.

If every high school student who plays basketball in America were to donate a pair of sneakers to a recycling program, the resulting material would be enough to create a new basketball court floor for every high school in the state of Indiana-and a few for neighboring high schools in Illinois, too.
