Ultraviolet (UV) radiation
Gone are the days of roasting on the beach in nothing but tanning oil. We're wearing more sunscreen than ever, and this type of electromagnetic energy, radiated from the sun, is the reason why. It has a shorter wavelength than visible blue or violet light and can lead to sunburn and related health problems, such as skin cancer. UV radiation is classified into three types: UVA, UVB, and UVC-the last of which is completely absorbed by the stratospheric ozone layer and oxygen. The first two, however, reach the Earth's surface. While the ozone layer provides us with protection from most UVB rays, the thinning of that layer has allowed for more of this radiation to reach us-bringing with it the rising popularity of floppy hats. |
