Catch the Rain

Consider installing a rain catchment system as a way to save water.

Rain catchment systems capture and funnel rain that falls on the roof of your home into an underground storage tank. This tank is connected to your home's water supply pipes, where it can provide a source of water for irrigation, clothes washing, or bathing.

One inch of rainfall on a 2000-square-foot roof can equal 1200 gallons of captured water. In a desert climate that receives only seven inches of rain annually, a catchment system may save an average household more than 8,000 gallons of water per year.

If every homeowner in Los Angeles installed a rain catchment system, the total annual water savings could total more than 4.5 billion gallons-enough to fill the Rose Bowl to the brim once a week for the entire year.
