This is a very thin sheet of wood. It is used to make plywood (many sheets laminated together) or as a facing material on furniture, flooring, and more. Some veneer products are environmentally friendly in that they use less wood overall than solid-wood alternatives. The type of adhesive used to bond the veneer can be problematic, however, for indoor air quality. If choosing veneer, it's smart to look for products made with formaldehyde-free adhesives.
