For decades, the car has been the quintessential symbol of individual freedom. Proponents of smart growth are betting that Americans would be more liberated by getting around on their own two feet. The goal of smart growth is to revitalize older cities and develop new, neighborhood-focused, sustainable communities that are well planned, walkable, diverse, and safe, as well as to emphasize good quality, regionally appropriate architecture, and comfortable, resource-efficient design. Also known as new urbanism.

The Energy Star program, sponsored jointly by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), promotes energy-efficient products and practices. Products that meet the required standards often bear the Energy Star label-a blue star icon that may be familiar by now. Purchasing those products, or incorporating Energy Star-approved building practices into a project, can mean more than saving energy-rebates are often available, and even federal tax credits.
