Runoff

This is one source of pollutants in the water supply. The term refers to rainwater or irrigation water that is not absorbed by the soil, but instead travels over the surface of the ground, picking up contaminants such as pesticides and fertilizers. Those chemicals are then carried into lakes and rivers and drinking-water sources. Runoff also leads to soil erosion.

   Sick building syndrome (SBS)

Is it your imagination? Maybe you really just don't like that job? It's something of a mysterious situation, but this syndrome-in which simply spending time in a building leads to ill health effects, although no specific illness or cause can be found-is very real. Factors that contribute to sick building syndrome are inadequate ventilation, chemical air pollution (including VOCs) from both indoor and outdoor sources, and biological contaminants such as mold. Leaving the building usually relieves the symptoms. Sick building syndrome shouldn't be confused with "building-related illness," which is when a specific airborne contaminant is known to be causing the symptoms, as with Legionnaires' disease.
