Polyethylene

This lightweight, translucent, and flexible plastic is used for grocery bags, food containers, household-cleaner bottles, house wrap products, and much more. It is one of the most common-and least toxic-petroleum-based plastics. There are high- and low-density polyethylene varieties; these are labeled numbers 2 and 4, respectively, inside the triangular recycling symbol. For more on plastic, click here.
