Polyester

Not just the fiber that makes leisure suits and gauchos possible, polyester has long outlasted those misguided fashion statements from the '70s. The term refers to a whole family of petroleum-based plastic polymers. As a fiber, it is used to make resilient, low-maintenance (though flammable) synthetic fabrics; it is also made from the same material (polyethylene terephthalate, or PET) as many soda bottles and food containers. In fact, recycled PET plastics can provide source material for polyester fibers.
