Ozone

This chemical molecule, consisting of three oxygen atoms, has something of a dual personality: On the one hand, it's helpful, playing a protective role in the stratosphere by creating a layer that shields the Earth's surface from ultraviolet radiation. Closer to Earth, however, the chemical's dark side comes out-it's a toxic air pollutant, high levels of which can cause lung and eye irritation. It's created when sunlight reacts with certain pollutants in the air that are generated by, among other things, automobiles and industrial facilities. Ozone is one of a number of greenhouse gases in the troposphere that contribute to global warming.
