New urbanism

For decades, the car has been the quintessential symbol of individual freedom. Proponents of new urbanism are betting that Americans would be more liberated by getting around on their own two feet. Sometimes called "smart growth," the goal of new urbanism is to revitalize older cities and develop new, neighborhood-focused, sustainable communities that are well planned, walkable, diverse, and safe, as well as to emphasize good quality, regionally appropriate architecture, and comfortable, resource-efficient design.
