Kilowatt hour (kWh)

This common measurement of electrical energy consumption is equal to the use of 1000 watts of power in one hour. If an appliance uses 100 watts of electricity an hour for ten hours, it uses a total of one kWh of energy. This is the measurement the electric company uses to calculate your bill, so knowing how many kWh of energy an appliance uses over the course of a month or year, for example, can help you determine the operating cost of that appliance.
