If building or remodeling a home, you'll almost certainly hear about these. Part of the framing of a building, these are the parallel, horizontal beams that support a floor or ceiling. They are often made of wood, concrete, or steel. Engineered wood can be another, more eco-friendly joist material in some cases.
Renewable energy doesn't come only from the sun, wind, and water. Biomass, which is any organic, non-petroleum-based matter that can be used as fuel, has the potential to be sustained indefinitely if properly managed. It's the organic leftovers from forestry and farming that can be put to good use creating energy, instead of going to waste in a landfill. Some examples of biomass include wood residue from forest clearing and mills, livestock waste, aquatic plants, and sugarcane (bagasse).
