Fossil fuel

It's ingenious if you think about it: Long-dead plants and animals are reborn as fuel for our modern life. These ancient remains are running our cars, lighting our stoves, and firing up our factories. Over millions of years they have become usable, carbon-based, organic fuels such as oil, coal, and natural gas. These energy sources are not renewable however, and the mass-scale burning of fossil fuels has contributed to tremendous environmental damage, including global warming and acid rain, among other problems. And as fossil fuel use increases and supplies are projected to dwindle, one solution may lie in sustainable energy sources such as wind and solar.
