Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)

"There's got to be a better way," captures the essence of the Forest Stewardship Council. The FSC demonstrates that forestry does not have to equal wholesale forest destruction. Despite its popular image as inherently harmful, logging can be a responsible and sustainable business, and one that greatly benefits local indigenous populations, if certain standards-aimed at protecting the ecosystem, developing respectful partnerships, and harvesting in a way that allows the forest to continue to thrive, to name a few-are met. The FSC is an international, nonprofit organization devoted to developing and promoting these standards. If you're buying wood products-anything from furniture to printer paper, look for the FSC logo: It says that the wood was harvested from a forest that is well cared for and up to standard.
