Energy Star offers a quick and easy way to know you're making a good choice for the environment, whether you're picking out a new dishwasher or new windows for your house. The Energy Star program, sponsored jointly by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), promotes energy-efficient products and practices. Products that meet the required standards often bear the Energy Star label-a blue star icon that may be familiar by now. Purchasing those products, or incorporating Energy Star-approved building practices into a project, can mean more than saving energy-rebates are often available, and even federal tax credits.    Energy efficiency ratio (EER)

Ready for a chill? This standard air-conditioning system rating refers to the cooling capacity of a unit (in Btus per hour) divided by the power it consumes (in watts), at a given outdoor temperature. It is related to the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER), which is a measure of a cooling system's efficiency over an entire cooling season. In both cases, the higher the number, the more efficient the unit. These ratios can help you compare the energy efficiency of your air conditioner to newer models, and decide if a replacement is due. Tip: Cooling equipment purchased before 1992 is likely to be extremely inefficient when compared to today's models.
